The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K9 Unit recently lost one of its most beloved and dedicated partners, K9 Leico, a Belgian Malinois patrol dog who faithfully served the department since 2017.
For the past eight years, Leico worked alongside his handler, Officer Carrillo, assisting Patrol, SWAT, Major Violators, and numerous specialized units in locating and apprehending dangerous suspects. His courage, intelligence, and unwavering dedication made him an invaluable member of the department and a trusted partner to the officers who served beside him.
Beyond his work in the field, Leico was known for his energetic personality and gentle nature. He proudly represented the K9 Unit at demonstrations for fellow officers, local schools, and the Hispanic Citizens Academy, helping strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community. One of his favorite places to visit was Dispatch, where he never missed a chance to get attention from the dispatchers, who adored him.
Whether protecting the community or greeting those he met along the way, Leico left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His loyalty, enthusiasm, and larger-than-life personality made him far more than a police dog. He was a teammate, a partner, and a cherished member of the LVMPD family.
Continuing Leico’s Legacy
As the department mourns Leico’s passing, we have the opportunity to honor his extraordinary service by helping the LVMPD K9 Unit welcome and prepare the next police service dog to continue the mission he carried out with such distinction.
Funds raised through this campaign will help support the purchase and preparation of a new K9, including specialized training, equipment, veterinary care, and other resources necessary to prepare a K9 team for service.
