About the Unit

Special Weapons & Tactics

The LVMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Bureau is a full-time unit dedicated to managing high-risk operations throughout the community. Their primary mission is to respond to and peacefully resolve critical incidents without loss of life.

In partnership with the Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT focuses on securing the voluntary surrender of individuals and executing high-risk search warrant services. LVMPD SWAT is one of the few full-time teams in the country — each year responding to numerous hostage situations and carrying out approximately 365 high-risk search or arrest warrants.

Primary Mission

“To respond to and peacefully resolve critical incidents without loss of life — equipped to gather critical intelligence and buy valuable time for informed decision-making and effective planning.”

Beyond tactical operations, the team emphasizes the sanctity of human life and is trained in the use of less-lethal weapons. The department maintains a strong commitment to respecting the dignity and rights of all individuals, with a focus on minimizing the use of force through skill, discipline, and superior planning.
