Standing With Olive and the Rubio Family
For nearly four years, Rogelio Rubio has served as a Corrections Officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department at the Clark County Detention Center. Today, Rogelio and his family are facing something no parent should have to face: their 2-year-old daughter, Olive, has been diagnosed with liver cancer.
Olive has already overcome more in her young life than most people ever will.
Born prematurely at just 22 weeks, Olive spent the first five months of her life in the NICU. During that time, she underwent heart and eye surgeries and required breathing support while her lungs continued to develop. Despite everything she faced, Olive beat the odds and was eventually able to go home with her family.
Now, she is being asked to fight again.
Another Battle Ahead
Olive has been diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer that primarily affects young children.
Her treatment is expected to include up to six months of chemotherapy, surgery, hospital stays, and an extended period of recovery. Her care will require frequent travel to medical appointments, and the family may need to travel out of state for her surgery.
For Rogelio, asking for help has not been easy. Like so many who work in law enforcement and corrections, he is accustomed to showing up, doing his job, and staying strong no matter what is happening at home.
But this time, he is asking his law enforcement family and the community to stand beside his daughter.
