About LVMPD Communications

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) 911 Communications Bureau is a full-time, 24/7 operation responsible for managing emergency and non-emergency law enforcement communications for one of the largest police agencies in the nation. Serving the entire Las Vegas Valley and surrounding areas, the bureau’s mission is to provide rapid, accurate, and professional response to the public’s calls for service, ensuring that police resources are dispatched quickly, safely, and effectively.

As the critical link between the community and LVMPD’s patrol, investigative, and specialized units, the 911 Communications Bureau answers over two million calls for service each year. These calls range from in-progress crimes, disturbances, and critical incidents to essential public safety information requests. Call takers and police dispatchers work together in a high-paced environment to gather precise information, assess situations, and direct officers to where they are needed most.

Operational Excellence & Training

The Communications Bureau is known for its precision, speed, and ability to perform under pressure. Each member undergoes extensive training in crisis communication, law enforcement procedures, radio discipline, and the use of advanced computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems. Staff are also prepared to coordinate large-scale critical incidents, officer-involved emergencies, and multi-unit tactical responses.

Performance standards are monitored continuously to ensure clear, concise, and timely communications between the public, dispatchers, and officers in the field. Ongoing scenario-based training ensures that personnel remain ready for any type of police-related emergency, from active shooter situations to coordinated warrant services.

Community Engagement & Career Development

The LVMPD 911 Communications Bureau is also a national leader in career development and outreach. It is one of the first dispatch centers in the country to host a Dispatch Explorers Program, offering youth ages 16–20 the opportunity to learn about law enforcement communications and explore a future career as a police dispatcher. Participants gain hands-on experience with call-taking simulations, CAD systems, and radio communications, while learning about teamwork, situational awareness, and the responsibilities of being the first point of contact in an emergency.

Commitment to the Mission

911 professionals in the Communications Bureau uphold LVMPD’s ICARE values of Integrity, Courage, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. They are often the very first point of contact in a police response, providing calm reassurance to the public while relaying critical information to officers. Their work directly impacts the safety of both the community and responding units.

The bureau emphasizes the sanctity of human life, aiming to support safe resolutions and informed decision-making in every situation. Whether coordinating a large tactical operation, tracking a fleeing suspect, or guiding officers during high-risk calls, LVMPD’s 911 professionals are an indispensable part of the department’s success.

Through skill, discipline, and dedication, the LVMPD 911 Communications Bureau continues to set the standard for excellence in law enforcement dispatch operations—serving as the “first, first responders” for the city of Las Vegas.
